Norfolk County Swimming Championships

Norfolk County Swimming Championships have been held recently over three weekends at Wymondham and Thetford. This annual event gave West Norfolk swimmers a chance to pit themselves against competition from all over the county in events ranging from 50 to 1500 metres. Counties presents the opportunity for swimmers to gain qualifying times for Regional Championships later this year. Due to the nature of this event, stamina and dedication is required for the early starts and long days, from both swimmers and parents alike. Many dedicated mothers put aside any thoughts of breakfast in bed on Mothering Sunday, instead making an early start to transport and watch their children compete.

Performances from all West Norfolk swimmers were superb with 95% gaining personal bests over all events. Abigail Whiting produced the swim of her life to take the 100m freestyle Open title in a hugely exciting race in 1.00.61, from Sophie Green by the merest fingertip. Nathan Wells continued his season with a phenomenal 17 out of 17 1st place group wins, 15 Regional time qualifications and 5 1st place Open wins, the majority all pb’s. Not to be outdone, younger brother Joe gained 15 out of 17 event pb’s. Josh Gray made a triumphant return to Norfolk on a weekend break from University to take the 100m breaststroke title. Robert Addis, aged 9, produced an amazing swim at his first Counties to take the 200 breast title.
