Arena Spalding 2012

An experienced team from West Norfolk Swimming Club competed  in the final of the National Arena League at Spalding. Competition was fierce with teams from Melton Mowbray,Kettering, South Lincs, St Ives and UEA Norwich A. West Norfolk were on top form and at the end of a thrilling evening’s competition  were unfortunate to just miss out on the title.

West Norfolk got off to an excellent start winning 4 out of the first 6 relays in spectacular style. Ashley Pattison , making a return to West Norfolk from his studies at Bath University, scored the Club’s first win of the night in the Mens Open 200m I/M. The Ladies Open Medley Relay team  led from start to finish, taking victory from South Lincs by a 7 second margin. Head Coach Sarah Vanderloo took to the water in the 100m breaststroke Open age event and also medley relay. Emily Jeffery bade an emotional farewell to competitive swimming with West Norfolk after 8 hugely enjoyable years, tackling the 100m fly and medley relay.

Other individual wins on the night came from:

Chloe Sorrell, 50m back 10/11 yrs; Hannah Janisch 100m back and 100m fly 15/u; Nathan Wells 100m back and 100m free 15/u; Sophie Green 100m fly Open age; Ashley Pattison 100m fly Open age; Abigail Whiting 100m back and100m free 13/u; Alex Murray100m back and 100m free Open age; Joshua Gray 100m breast Open age; Joe Wells 100m free 13/u.

After a hugely exciting and hard fought 50 events, West Norfolk had amassed an incredible 19 first places but South Lincs were just able to take the title due to more 2nd placings. This is a very creditable performance for such a relatively small club in illustrious company and the whole club should be very proud of their performances and wonderful team spirit, Many thanks as always to our Coach and hard working poolside helpers and lively vocal encouragement from our supporters. Fish and chips were much enjoyed on the journey home to round off a fine night’s swimming.

Final Placings

1st South Lincs 189, 2nd West Norfolk 171, 3rd UEA Norwich A 162, 4th St Ives 138, 5th Melton Mowbray 130 6th Kettering 88.

Presentation Night

Sam Baxter  (Chairman WNSC)

"I want to publicly thank all those who helped arrange and co-ordinate the recent Presentation evening. Everyone involved should take a great deal of pride that the only thing that could be improved on was the first speaker.

Debs once again put together an excellent night, organising the generation of all the Certificates, medals and trophy engraving.  Vince for collecting, storing & delivering trophies in time to get them all engraved, I don't think you knew just how much fun that job was going to be!

Our ladies selling tickets and manning the doors, selling raffle tickets and generally keeping good order.

Mr Murray for running the 100 board, you've never been so red.

All those who provided food, you were exceptionally generous, there must have been enough food to feed a hungry army if one hundred swimmers couldn't finish it all.

My fellow announcers for standing up in front of the rest of the Club and allowing everyone a rest from me.

To Rod and Angela Gray, for being our photographers, I know you didn't have to come but your efforts help add to the overall point of the evening which is after all to celebrate the achievements of the swimmers.  Plus the photos are an excellent reminder to the swimmers just how well they have all done.

Once again it was a joy to see so many people having such a good time, you all deserved a fun night and it seems to me you made sure that the efforts that went into organising the evening were matched by your efforts in ensuring that you all enjoyed it.

I would also like to extend my congratulations to all the swimmers who competed at the Club Championships, there were new Champions, two & three time Champions and countless PBs across all ages and some excellent racing.  Keep training hard and I know you'll put on an even better show next time.

If I've missed anyone out it's only due to poor memory and I'm truly sorry.  This Club depends on volunteers at all levels and anyone who helps out has my sincere gratitude.
