Winter East Regional Championships 2013

Winter East Regional Championships have just been held at UEA Norwich, with West Norfolk's swimmers taking on the best from all over the East of England. This two day meet sees junior swimmers, up to the age of 16, taking on those over 16 in direct competition. Top class competition brings out the best in our swimmers, and with so much at stake, this occasion was no exception.

Christmas came early for fifteen year old Nathan Wells with a spectacular set of results, at the end of what has been a memorable year's swimming for him. He amassed the biggest number of junior medals, claiming four regional titles in the 50m, 100m and 200m backstroke and the 200m I/M, setting new pb's in the process. He also claimed three silver medals in the 400m free, 400m I/M and 1500m, all gruelling events. In total he set seven new pb's, and is now tantalisingly close to National Qualifying times in all his three backstroke events. With his dedication to hard work in training, this achievement is surely only a matter of time.

Nathan was not the only West Norfolk swimmer in sparkling form. Abbie Whiting turned in a superb performance in the 100m free to finish in bronze medal position, again with a new pb, up against senior opposition. She went on to set another three pb's over the course of the weekend. Natalie Coogans was in excellent form, producing three pb's and two top six place finishes. She is incredibly close to achieving a National time too, just 0.09 secs away on 50 breast stroke. Elliot Legg recorded pb's in the 100m back, 50m free and 50m fly, and Matthew Addis a well-deserved pb in the 400 free. Ryan Sykes and Josh Gray also recorded pb's in the 200m breast and 50m fly respectively. Samuel Chandler refused to be sidelined by a shoulder injury, and put in a brave performance  to take part in the 400m free.

At the end of the weekend, West Norfolk was the 4th placed club out of 14 on the Junior medal table, beating much larger clubs such as Cambridge and Peterborough, and only just behind Ipswich and UEA. Congratulations to all our swimmers for such an exciting weekend, and as always for the support they give to each other. Many thanks to head Coach Sarah Vanderloo, and the loyal, patient parents who had much to cheer.

Luton Autumn Long Course 2013

The busy year continues for West Norfolk swimmers, with a select band of eight travelling to Luton to compete in the presigious Autumn Long Course Meet at Inspire Sports Village, hosted by Team Luton. This event had attracted a huge number of entries, with many being turned away, so the team of Robert Addis,Zack Campbell-Maughan, Josh Gray, Ryan Sykes, Harry Thompson, Joseph Wells, Nathan Wells and Abbie Whiting, were amongst over 600 swimmers from more than 60 clubs nationwide. Robert Addis was the only nine year old boy to qualify and was swimming at his first long course and level 1 meet. Such was the standard of entries that the West Norfolk eight found themselves competing alongside 2012 Olympian Daniel Fogg and Paralympians James Hollis and Ellie Simmonds.

As expected competition was extremely tough, but this brought out some superb performances from our swimmers. Robert Addis came away with three top 6 places, and Nathan Wells and Abbie Whiting one each amongst their other excellent finishes. Nathan also came very close to achieving national times in the 100 and 200 backstroke and had an extra special achievement of 3rd in the 200 back as it was a double age group for medals in the 15/16 group.  Abbie whitings 200 freestyle was her best swim of the weekend. All the swimmers achieved lots of personal best times, clearly being inspired by the surroundings and level of competition, with much entertainment being provided for their loyal supporters.
