Icene Meet,Top Club, Boy,Girl Pictures October 2014

West Norfolk’s impressive start to the season continued in fine style at the Iceni Gala at Dereham. Held over a weekend, this meet usually rewards West Norfolk with a healthy haul of medals and personal bests. Opposing clubs came from all over the region, including St Felix School, Norwich Swan and Beccles. This year, a 60 strong team ranging in age from nine to nineteen years surpassed itself, coming away with Top Boy, Top Girl, and Top Team trophies.

From the first race it was clear to the other teams that West Norfolk was in top form, with swimmers right across the age range setting impressive pb’s. Nine year olds Harry Sharpe and Henry Overton dominated their age group, picking up a clutch of medals between them. Harry set some excellent times whilst revelling in the experience of a busy Open Meet, in the company of his young team mates. Robert Addis could not be matched in many of the events he swam, furthering his reputation as a highly ranked ten year old. Alex Hall and Freddie Laws were impressive in their races, collecting more medals throughout the weekend. Joseph Wells continued his promising season with numerous wins, along with Alex Florance who was in equally impressive form. Nathan Wells and Ryan Sykes, appeared to be greatly enjoying themselves, trading wins, recording pb’s and generally adding to what was something of a carnival atmosphere for the team. Zack Campbell-Maughan was simply unstoppable all weekend. His consistent performances throughout were rewarded with a very well deserved Top Boy trophy, delighting his family and team mates.

The girls were in equally good form. Consistent performances came from Natalie Coogans, Sophie Empson, Astrid Hubbard, Rachel Johnson, Molly Lee, Jenny Read and Roxanne Uys, amongst others. Elise Sorrell produced some of the best form of her career, taking a string of wins and top 3 places to snatch the Top Girl trophy, a thoroughly well deserved achievement. Every single swimmer contributed so much over the weekend, that it was no surprise when West Norfolk lifted the Top Visiting Club trophy too. Another successful coaching achievement for Sarah Vanderloo, showing how far the club has progressed in the last few seasons. Many thanks to all the poolside helpers and officials, without whom such events could not take place, and the ever patient army of family supporters.

WNSC Top club.

Top boy, Zack Campbell-Maughan.

Top girl, Elise Sorrell.

Anglia League Final 2014

West Norfolk Swimming Club made the long trek to Grantham recently for the Anglian League Final. This was a fiercely contested event, featuring opposition from Boston A and B teams, St Ives, Thetford and Wisbech. West Norfolk fielded an experienced team, led by captains Rebecca Baxter and Samuel Chandler, both of whom put in solid performances in their individual races. The customary cheery team spirit was in evidence, along with lively support from accompanying family members.

Sophie Empson added her own touch of sparkle, to record West Norfolk’s only win on the night, with a dazzling swim in the 15/under 100m breaststroke. Robert Addis can always be relied upon to fight stroke for stroke, on this occasion coming a very creditable second in the 200m individual medley.

West Norfolk finished in 5th place, with Boston A running out the eventual winners to take the title for 2014. Many thanks go to all our poolside helpers, officials and hardworking coaching staff.

5 Star Cases sponsors new timing kit cases

5 Star Times It right for West Norfolk Swimming Club

Leading European flightcase manufacturer 5 Star Cases continues its support of local West Norfolk Swimming Club (WNSC), with the design and supply of some special funky new flightcases to house its timing equipment, which is usually stored at Kings Lynn swimming pool.

5 Star’s Keith Sykes co-ordinated the project, saying, “We were approached by WNSC’s Chair Sam Baxter as they needed to be able to stow and transport their timing kit safely and easily. It’s one of their biggest capital assets, so we were very happy to offer a custom solution”.

Two of the cases each take four timing pads, and both feature a split-top design making the cases as accessible as possible and facilitating extremely quick and easy removal and deployment of the pads from the large cases.

They are constructed from 5 Star’s Tour grade specification materials with 9 mm ply utilised to minimise the weight, fitted with tough high quality casters for good portability.

These cases also have special drainage slots in the base, so the pads can be stowed immediately they are finished with and removed from the pool, and ventilation slots in the case lids encourage airflow and prevent damp accumulating.

The third trunk is a general purpose case to hold all the related computer equipment, control system components, electronic elements and other accessories including cabling, computer tripod and start/stop buzzer. This is based on 5 Star’s popular Eurotrucker range of road-trunks, complete with removable top tray.

The cases are all smartly finished in purple high pressure laminate with the distinctive WNSC logo screen printed prominently in white.

The Club is absolutely delighted.

“These cases are great – they are of the highest quality and will allow us to get maximum life out of the equipment. It’s important within an aquatic environment to give the electronics the best possible protection” states Sam Baxter.

He goes on to say that support from companies like 5 Star is “Essential” for the Club to continue to grow. It has allowed them to channel more funds and energies into coaching and developing their roster of young swimmers who are currently doing extremely well as witnessed by the younger swimmers taking Top Club honours at the recent Norfolk County Challenge Gala and for the first time ever having 4 swimmers at the National Age Group Championships.  We also have a number of swimmers who have been selected to represent their county for the first time.

Says Keith Sykes, “I think it’s really important to support local sports clubs and teams where possible, it’s great for the community and the self-development of so many young people. We were very pleased to be able to help out in such a practical and constructive way”.

WNSC would like to say a big thank you to Martyn Oxby, who was instrumental in coordinating and communicating with Keith Sykes on the design and handling of this large project.
