As 2015 draws to a close West Norfolk Swimmers have been busy ensuring they finish the year on a high. Nathan Wells and Natalie Coogans who won multiple gold medals in their age groups at the ASA Summer Nationals this year were competing in their first senior competition at the ASA Winter Nationals in Sheffield. The event was the conclusion of the short course (25m pool) season in Great Britain and saw many British Records tumble as the Country’s best swimmers continue their journey towards Rio 2016.
Nathan kicked off his 5 events with a pb time of 2.03.95 and 33rd place in the 200m Backstroke which gave him a taste of the competition and he went from strength to strength. Later in the morning he swam a 3second pb in the 400m Freestyle 3.55.01 which qualified him for the B final that evening where he finished 7th.
The 2nd Day of competition saw Nathan swim the 400m Individual Medley where he continued his fine form with a 6 second pb 4.26.91 and qualification for the B final. Natalie swam her first event of the meet, her favoured 200m Breastroke with a fine swim that also saw her join Nathan for the finals session that evening. Swimming in successive races both swimmers improved their rankings with Nathan finishing 8th and Natalie 6th in 2.31.25.
The final day of racing for the West Norfolk Swimmers continued in the same vein. Nathan swam a pb of 59.21 in the 100m Individual Medley to finish 36th, Natalie swam 1.11.25 in the 100m Breastroke just off her best time to finish 28th. Nathan concluded his meet with a fantastic swim in the 1500m Freestyle which earned him a 17 second pb of 15.40.05 and 16th place.
Just down the road from Nathan and Natalie another group of 18 swimmers spent the weekend embracing some Christmas fun and racing hard at Chesterfield. Highlights from the weekend were respective 3rd and 4th place finishes in the 200m Butterfly for brothers Alex and Jake Hall. 6th place in the 200m Backstroke for Joseph Wells and 3rd for Astrid Hubbard. Ryan Sykes swam to 3rd place in the 200m Breastroke as did Rosie Muspratt who also achieved her Regional qualifying time, the first of three she gained over the weekend. Jenny Read finished 4th and Natalie Warnes 6th in the 400m Freestyle. In the 100m Breastroke Ryan Sykes finished 2nd, Joseph Wells and Elise Sorrell 5th. In the 50m Backstroke Astrid Hubbard finished 4th in a Regional qualifying time and Chloe Sorrell 3rd. The 50m Breastroke was fruitful, as Rosie Muspratt swam to the silver medal and her 2nd Regional qualifying time, Elise Sorrell 4th, not to be outdone Ryan Sykes finished 2nd and Joseph Wells 4th in the boys finals. Rosie Muspratt earned her final Regional qualifying time in the 400m Individual Medley finishing 4th with Jenny Read 5th, in the boys event Joseph Wells swam to the Silver medal with Jake Lammas 5th. Oliver Newton won the first Gold medal for West Norfolk in the 100m Butterfly dropping under 1minute for the first time, Jenny Read was 6th for the girls. Elise Sorrell sprinted to 2nd in the 50m Freestyle. In the 100m Backstroke finals, Rachael Johnson was 5th, with sisters Chloe and Elise Sorrell earning 4th and 5th place respectively in the older age group. In the 50m Butterfly Oliver Newton won Gold again with Joseph Wells 4th and Jenny Read 5th. Ryan Sykes and Joseph Wells rounded off 2015 for the West Norfolk Swimmers with 4th and 5th place in the 100m Individual Medley.
